The team at Corinthian Events had the pleasure of working with the Ruderman Family Foundation in producing The 2017 Ruderman Inclusion Summit at the Seaport Hotel & World Trade Center in Boston. The purpose of The Summit was to bring together over 1,200 people from a variety of sectors to discuss, network and share best practice for inclusion of people with disabilities. In addition, The Summit also featured a TOM Global Makeathon, bringing individuals with a deep understanding of a need or challenge together to develop solutions for everyday challenges facing people with disabilities.

The Ruderman Family wanted everyone coming to be able to participate which is important and a challenge worth working to solve. First and foremost, in the effort to share the agenda with all attending guests, we created 7 versions; an online website agenda, in-app digital agenda, branded visually appealing printed brochure agenda, plain text printed agenda, no graphics agenda, large text print printed (9 page) agenda, and braille agenda. We also provided ASL Interpreters and CART Services at all official conference sessions.

It was also important that during downtime, attendees has activities to connect with eachother on. They included the art activation seen above, as well as a graffiti photo booth, and a chalkboard to share stories put together by The Mighty.

In addition, The Summit custom event app was designed to facilitate networking between attendees, allowing communication via message, creating personal schedules, social sharing and even setting up appointments with one another. Over 1,000 unique users over iOS devices, Web users, and Android Devices have since accessed the app… With so many active phone users – we also had 4 charging stations available to recharge devices!

For content, there were 3 main breakout times featuring17 breakout sessions total with panels including relevant topics such as Disability in Media, Interfaith – How do different faiths talk about disability?, and Networks: Building Networks as Essential to Social Change. Attendees could choose to go to any breakout of their choosing, then join back as a group for the incredible plenary speakers.

The opening plenary was a hit; Oscar award winning actress, Marlee Matlin was introduced by actress and model, Stephanie Nogueras, known for her role on Switched at Birth. And, additional 3 plenaries throughout the conference welcomed other well-known advocates for rights of people with disabilities.

Senator Maggie Hassan, Congressman Jim Langevin and Congressman Gregg Harper spoke at the Monday Morning Plenary on policy, moderated by Stephanie Coueignoux from Fox 25 News, Boston.

Acrobat and aerialist, Jen Bricker, born without legs yet full of triumph, gave an inspirational talk at the keynote lunch.

Dr. Joyce Banda, the Former President of Malawi, Activist and Entrepreneur, was the closing guest speaker followed by an incredible performance by Mandy Harvey.

Mandy Harvey, a deaf singer-songwriter, known for her golden buzzer winning audition on America's Got Talent, blew away the crowd with her beautiful pitch perfect voice and meaningful lyrics.

While the Summit attendees enjoyed all the incredible content, there was a smaller group of about 60 people working away in an area designated as The Makeathon. Sponsored by TOM Global, Northeastern University and the Ruderman Family Foundation – this group included talented 'Makers – Designers, developers, engineers, etc' and 'Need-Knowers – those with a deep understanding of a disability', working together to come up with solutions to 7 everyday challenges faced by someone with disabilities. These creatives worked with 3D Printers, laser cutters, and other equipment to create solutions over the 2 days. Makeathon wrapped with presentations and awards.

We want to extend a huge thank you to the Ruderman Family Foundation for bringing our team on to work with them on this challenge and thank all 100 speakers who took part in the 2-day Summit and to all those advocates who continue the work!
